Art on Leather

Because of my work as a textile and ‘One of a Kind’ clothes designer, I have been working with various types of leather for many years. When I fell in love with wildlife and started painting these wonderful creatures I had quite a lot of leather left in the studio. Over the years I have put this to good use and the current selection of art on leather is here for you to see. Because the technique of painting on leather is difficult to master, I am asked many times why I paint on leather. As I have perfected the ‘art’ of Art on Leather over many years, the answer is: ‘Because I can!

TYGER, TYGER

He lives in my studio and keeps and eye on me every day.  One day he will go to a new keeper, but they must love him as I do!! Here is the biggest painting I have ever done – a full leather hide painted with acrylics and an absolute Showstopper.  It was so big that I had to nail it to the wall of my studio and hang it from the gutter brackets on the outside of my house to take the photograph!  One thing you need to know about Art on Leather is that there is no room for errors when painting.  You can’t rub it out if you go wrong.  It has to be right first time every time.  Art on Leather is a very hard master, non forgiving but when finished is a thing of beauty. This is the ultimate challenge and one that I absolutely love to do!

Big Cat Head Studies

Having spent many years as a wildlife and animal artist specialising in photo-realistic artwork, I needed to challenge myself as I felt I was getting stale.  So started to plan more as an artist-designer and worked on the Big Cat heads, concentrating on only shapes and colours, not the fine detailed art of the past.   So here was a major challenge – painting in a more graphic style on Leather!  I really love how these images have turned out, big, bold and as with all my art work, the eyes have it!
